SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — Commuters using Highway 17 between Santa Cruz and the Santa Clara County line should expect brief, moving lane restrictions on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, as Caltrans crews refresh pavement markings.
Caltrans District 5 says the work is planned in both directions between Highway 1 and the county line, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The agency describes the operation as intermittent rolling lane closures, with each interruption expected to last no more than 10 minutes.
Not a full-day highway shutdown
This announcement concerns a moving striping operation, not a continuous closure of all Highway 17 lanes. Drivers may encounter a temporary queue as the work crew advances and traffic control moves along the route. Caltrans says signs and directional messages will warn motorists.
The timing matters for people traveling between Santa Cruz, Scotts Valley and Silicon Valley for work, medical appointments or deliveries. Build a small buffer into travel plans and watch for workers, equipment and changing lane patterns.
Two separate Highway 17 and Highway 9 disruptions
The November 4 striping work is separate from the planned November 2–6 daytime closure on a section of Highway 9. Travelers considering alternative routes should check both highways rather than assuming an ordinary detour will be free of roadwork.
Caltrans says the striping schedule is weather permitting. If conditions change, the operation may be postponed or modified. Check Caltrans QuickMap immediately before driving for the latest traffic restrictions.
