SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — October 27, 2026. Unusually high tides prompted the National Weather Service to continue a Coastal Flood Advisory through 5 p.m. Friday, October 30, covering northern Monterey Bay and other coastal zones. The notice matters for people who visit low-lying beaches, harbor access routes and tidal waterways along the Santa Cruz County coast.
The advisory does not mean that all of Santa Cruz’s streets were underwater on October 27. It identifies possible flooding at vulnerable elevations, temporary road restrictions and erosion; exact conditions depend on site, tide timing and any local protective work.
What the warning covers
The NWS October 27 bulletin anticipates up to 2.1 feet of water above ground level in susceptible low-lying areas within its broader advisory region. Its high-tide information is regional, and the San Francisco tide-gauge forecast should not be treated as the observed water height at the Santa Cruz Wharf.
High tides can push water across waterfront paths and beach access even with calm skies. Because water and waves may travel farther than normal, beachgoers should not assume that a familiar dry route will remain passable. Coastal erosion can also make access points less stable.
Do not confuse stormwater work or old damage with today’s flood
Santa Cruz has separate infrastructure projects involving older storm and wave damage along West Cliff Drive. An October 27 state environmental filing for one emergency project describes damage dating back to December 2022–January 2023; that historic damage is not evidence of a new October 27 roadway collapse. Similarly, roadwork elsewhere on Highway 1 can have causes unrelated to coastal flooding.
For accurate, current local warnings use National Weather Service Bay Area, Caltrans QuickMap and Santa Cruz County emergency notifications. Do not drive or walk into unknown floodwater.
